Stress is an inevitable and normal part of life. No one gets away without experiencing some level of it. Sometimes we can anticipate it, but often, it catches us by surprise. An unexpected event changes the course of our day or perhaps even our lives. We all recognize the unpleasant effects - the queasy feeling in our stomach, sweaty hands, unsteady feet, increased heart rate, and the sense of our brains not thinking clearly. Long term, chronic stress can have dangerous effects on health (digestive issues, heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, depression etc). Stress reduction is an important skill! What are some ways you can reduce your experience of stress, if you can't reduce the stress-inducing event itself? Check out the following for some strategies to try out the next time you need it.

1) Practice slow, conscious, controlled breathing. Deep, slow and controlled breathing helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system which is associated with "rest and digest". Deep breathing can lower both heart rate and blood pressure.

2) Exercise. Exercise lowers stress and increases endorphins (mood enhancers). It also improves the quality of your sleep.

3) Create a haven. Light a scented candle and play some soothing music.

4) Find something funny to watch, listen to, or read. Laughter is a great antidote to stress!

5) Think of the things you are grateful for and tell someone or write them down.

6) Talk it out and/or write about the stressful situation. Then let it go and avoid ruminating on it.

7) Eat nutritious foods. Nervously eating junk foods will only make digestive stress worse. Your body needs vital minerals and nutrients during stressful times more than ever. Give it what it needs!

8) FInd an anchor thought, verse or phrase to focus on and repeat to yourself. Repeating memorized scripture, or a calming phrase helps calm your mind and focuses it on something positive.

Don't let stress get the better of you. Take steps to keep yourself well, relaxed, calm and confident.
