What's the fly distracting you?

Today I watched as a fly managed to disrupt the attention of multiple people gathered as a group. There we were, all meeting for a purpose, focused on the speaker when a teeny-tiny, black fly began buzzing from head to head. This was not a shy fly, as he was quite happy to land just long enough to result in a hand swat before he flew on to the next person. As someone standing at the back of the group (what can I say, I've always been a back row kind of girl), it was quite amusing to see the distraction this one little insect caused as it made its rounds from person to person -almost like watching a "wave" in a sports match - it moved from person to person resulting in a systematic swatting of hands and ducking of heads as it travelled along. It didn't matter how entertaining, funny, interesting or thought provoking the speaker was, this one little fly was capable of disrupting the concentration of every person it approached.

Isn't that like life though? We have a myriad of distractions in our lives that try to draw our focus away from what we should be doing, what our goals are or what we most want to accomplish. Got a test to study for? Buzz....doesn't that cupboard need cleaning first? Got a work assignment that's overdue? Buzz....maybe I should answer those emails first. Got a fitness goal you are training for? Buzz....wow! Look at that new deadlift technique....maybe I should be practicing that! Trying to follow a sensible diet while focusing on increasing vegetable intake? Buzz....Ah! The keto diet - that must be what I should be doing! And so it goes.

Much of fitness, like life, is about consistency and not letting the buzz distract you. Not getting derailed in your plans because someone else is doing something newer, "better" or more glamorous. Not losing track of your most important values because some lesser trend has come along. Not giving up on the small habits, day after day, because an ad on facebook says you can get it all tomorrow. Most successes follow by simply showing up, day after day, putting in the work even when progress isn't always instantaneous or obvious.

What are your flys? What distracts you from your main purpose and goals? Dan John once said "The goal is to keep the goal the goal!" For a long time I didn't get it. Today the fly taught me a lesson :)
