Upgrading your Diet Tip #5 Smart Carbs

Carbohydrates get a bad rap these days, but for most people, they are a great source of vitamins, minerals and body fuel for activity and exercise. So, what are carbohydrates and how can you make smart choices when eating them? Carbohydrates are the sugars, starches and fibers found in fruits, grains, vegetables and milk products. Molecularly, they are formed of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen. Carbohydrates are used by the body to create energy and come in two forms - simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates are made of 1-2 sugars (think fructose/sucrose) and are broken down quickly when consumed. (Diets high in simple carbohydrates can be a cause of type 2 diabetes, but simple carbohydrate can be useful for athletes participating in endurance events who need fuel sources available quickly, so they aren't entirely all bad).

Complex carbohydrates have 3 or more sugars and are slower to digest/break down. These are generally preferred as the "smart" carbohydrate type for the average meal. Vegetables, fruits, beans, legumes, and whole grains qualify as smart carbs - they are full of vitamins and minerals but are also low calorie sources of energy. Which is your favorite smart carb?
